Father Jacques Marquette (1637-1675) was a French Jesuit whose life was uniquely marked by water. Sent to Quebec as a missionary in 1666, he crossed the Atlantic by boat. Along with Louis Jolliet, he made an exploratory trip to map the northern part of the Mississippi River by canoe. When he died he was buried along the shores of Lake Michigan.
